Withholding Tips Given Farmers
PARKERSBURG Any farmer paying cash wages of 150 dollars or more must withhold Social Security taxes and report the withholdings to the Internal Revenue Service by Jan 31. Hugh D. Jones IRS director said farmers must withhold similar taxes for persons hired 20 days or more per year. He reminded farmers are subject to 1972 self employment tax if farm income is 400 dollars or more, with a 7.5 percent rate up to 675 dollars, in addition to income tax. A farmer is self employed if he employs others on his farm even if he does not live there.

Tape Players Stolen From Cars Plague Charleston
Police report multiple car tape players stolen this week in Charleston. Stacy A. Willis of Victor and Jerry Melton of 126 Garrison Ave reported missing players to police Friday. Willis said a 3139 tape player was taken from his car near Dickinson and Lewis streets. Melton said a $59 unit was taken from a car parked at Boulevard Recreation Center.

Kanawha County reports a rise in flu like illnesses totaling 1 160 cases this week said Health Director Page Seckford. Nursing homes hospitals and plants accounted for cases including 90 at Charleston’s vocational rehab center in Institute and eight at Union Carbide in South Charleston.
