Gov Patteson urges funding for the veterans bonus medical school and urban relief through a liquor markup, one cent soft drink tax, and doubling the beer tax, rejects income and sales taxes, and seeks civil defense boosts and constitutional and redistricting actions.
Governor Patteson reaffirmed support for a four year medical school in West Virginia urging the legislature to act immediately. A 10 member House Senate Interim Committee, created in 1949 to study the proposal, rescheduled a meeting.
Gov Patteson devoted two and a half pages of his 42 page address to urging a new medical school and proposed a soft drink tax to finance it. He left site location to the Legislature after cautioning against a heated debate on where to place the campus. Plans for a committee recommendation were disrupted as a quorum failed yesterday.
Sen Robertson D Va questions funding a 3 billion housing program, warns of ruinous inflation atop a 60 billion defense budget as Senate Banking Committee opens hearings. Raymond Foley defends the measure as a defense center housing aid. Bricker had previously criticized the plan to bankers.

Ten people including seven passengers and three crew members died when Northwest Airlines flight 262 crashed and burned near Reardan Washington, about 20 miles west of Spokane. Names of the deceased include W. J. Craft Charles Wood G J Milligan Curtis Edwards W H Goodlowe Robert R Manz and crew members Lloyd Rickman Edward Gander and Joan Tabor. The plane originated in Minneapolis with a flight to Spokane and witnesses reported immediate flames on impact as rescuers faced slow snowbound access.
New York January 16. A New Haven railroad engineer boarded the wrong train at Fort Chester yards. The crew of the correct train, left behind, caught up and the wrong train was pressed into service to save time. The long train arrived Grand Central Terminal about 34 minutes late after brake trouble added 14 minutes.
Prime Minister Nehru said the United Nations Korea cease-fire plan meets many of Red China’s conditions and Peiping promised a careful study. Moscow reports Pravda dismissed the plan as a US ploy to buy time for reinforcing troops in Korea. Nehru warned Korean settlement hinges on China’s cooperation.
Washington reports retail food prices reached a record high with a possible shakeup in top stabilization officials. The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the grocery index hit a new peak between December 15 and January 2, while administration sources discuss staff boosts and potential replacements in the stabilization team to accelerate price controls.

An early-morning explosion at the Carbide and Carbon Institute plant in South Charleston at 2 27 a m injured four workers and knocked out acid production equipment. Injured were Keith Brick 22 Cross Lanes Earl McFadden 37 South Charleston Ralph Garnett Charleston and Lloyd Cain Roxalana Rd Dunbar. None faces serious injury hospital says. Plant fire department contained blaze in 15 minutes and production will be curtailed while officials assess damage.
A massive eight alarm fire on Baltimore's south waterfront gutted the old troopship that carried Woodrow Wilson in 1918 and destroyed a $5,000,000 ammo pier. Four firemen and three civilians were injured as 40 mile per hour winds fed the flames. The George Washington burned as flames consumed the 1,000 foot timber pier and nearby tug and barges.
In an inaugural address Governor James F. Byrnes urged bombing Communist China and warned that without such authorization American troops would be pulled from Korea. He pressed sending soldiers and military supplies to bolster Western Europe as a key priority.
McDowell County numbers king Frank lin Callaway, 44, was sentenced to two years in a federal prison for tax evasion after prosecutors alleged concealed income and payments. A probation report linked him to large sums given to State Sen. Billy Mitchell and ex-sheriff Russell Paynter during campaigns, with disputed figures. Federal agents claim earnings of 485000 for 1944-47 versus 126945.37 reported, leaving a shortfall of 359000.28 and a 284100.28 plus 50 percent penalty.
An escaped Idaho prisoner Robert Lee Gilford took three hostages during a 200 mile flight from Twin Falls to Willard Utah. He threatened with a puree knife and seized a gun before being recaptured when officers surprised him at a service station. Gilford faces federal kidnapping charges. Deputy Sheriff Jim Benham, one of the hostages, injured his thumb while restraining the pistol mechanism.
