The Associated Press reports New Year customs varied by locale from Times Square to Tokyo and Buenos Aires. Citizens welcomed 1965 with bells, fireworks, and trash tosses while leaders like President Johnson marked the holiday at home.
In a clash near the Jordan River area both sides opened fire after a cease-fire was said to be arranged. A Israeli civilian wounded in the opening clash died later. The fighting stopped briefly before resuming, with casualties not updated. Damascus accused Israel of violating the frontier by deploying armored bulldozers into no man's land.
Refugees say American missionary William McChesney 28 from Phoenix was trampled and dumped into the Wamba River by rebel fighters in Congo. A total of 28 held whites were fatally harmed as Congolese government forces and mercenaries freed refugees near Wamba and Mungbere. Witnesses report savage acts, executions, and violent beatings during two months of imprisonment.

A Thursday settlement dismissed the 200 000 dollar suit against Bobby Baker. Capitol Vending Co filed on Sept 9 1983 alleging Baker steered a lucrative defense contract away. Fresh graves believed to hold four U S Army helicopter crewmen lured a Viet Cong ambush near Binh Gia.
