Mayo County Council Struggles Over Self-Paid Taxes
Mayo County Council debated a peculiar tax loop in which taxes due on waterworks and sewage plants were paid to the council itself through its own tax collector. Councillor H J Kenny questioned the arrangement while the county accountant explained the funds were owed to the council and would be paid to itself. Albany NY GP Justice Tans L Friedman of the State Supreme Court was ousted by the Court on the Judiciary for unethical conduct. The six member panel split four to two with Friedman planning an appeal to the U S Supreme Court. His term ran through 1970 and the case involved an ambulance chasing inquiry from 1957 linked to his former partner brother Malcolm.
