A car carrying five passengers slid off a retaining wall on Kanawha Boulevard during Friday night rains and dropped toward the Kanawha River. One person was injured. Gordon Franklin, 25, was treated and discharged. Driver Richard Bullard, 23, reported a wheel struck a divider before the crash. The other passengers were Drewer Bullard, 28, Mary Lacy, 19, and Eugene Long, 18.
Charleston police will continue the campaign against prostitution until the problem is virtually cleaned up. Police Chief Dallas Bias said that as of Friday night known or suspected offenders had been jailed and more arrests were expected. He noted surprise at the number of prostitutes found and forecast 50 or more arrests before the drive ends.
Charleston detectives investigated a string of burglaries and vandalism including break ins at Horace Mano Junior High and Kanawha City Elementary. A radio was stolen and windows broken as part of a larger anti prostitution drive led by Mayor Shanklin. Several suspects were held for health tests with results pending.
Police search for a young man who fled with a donation container from Sterling Restaurant at 811 Washington St E. The same day vacant Framing Lincoln Mercury at 2 Virginia St E reported several cars damaged with windows cut and parts removed. Detectives investigated two young women's report of a nude man who accosted them in an alley between Randolph and Wyoming Streets at Delaware Ave. he fled when screamed.
A water main leak near Virginia and Elizabeth Streets dropped area pressure while sewer workers from Mountain State Construction Co fled a tunnel when water seeped in. The break was found about ten minutes after trouble was reported at 9 30 p m. Repairs continued near midnight. A separate incident saw a car strike a gas meter at 1046 A Wakhurst Drive, releasing natural gas until United Fuel Gas Co. shut it off.
