Lawmakers consider 247000 annually in tax relief to Wheeling Downs and other horse tracks after last year’s fires. The measure would adjust wagering taxes, offset revenue losses with more racing days, and aid track recovery while a broad slate of bills advances through the Senate.
Waller J. Tuohy and Cyrus Eaton were named to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad board as part of a slate by B and O vice presidents and directors. Also named were Dr. Milton S. Eisenhower John F. E. Kusik and John E. Motz. The C and O recently took control of the B and O as merger talks continue. Kusik elected vice president finance. board moves regular meetings to Baltimore.
Mingo County in Williamson Virginia will receive first federal aid for airport construction. Verett L Parrish executive director of the West Virginia State Aeronautics Commission said he planned to return by helicopter to find a suitable site, the Main obstacle.
A Kanawha County hunter aged 64, Arnold Peters of Slum Creek, was bitten on the face by a hunting dog while hunting with a friend. Peters receives antirabies shots from a South Charleston physician after the dog, owned by Robert Ranson of Tyler Mountain, died within 46 hours and later tested positive for rabies.
Gov Barron requested a 28575 grant from the Area Redevelopment Administration on Wednesday to support Glenville State College. Funds would finance a Little Kanawha River basin resources study and provide technical aid to business and industry in a north central West Virginia county. The study would be conducted at a Glenville community development center.
The FAA restricted flights over President Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy’s planned Virginia ranch area after neighbor complaints of low level planes over the Rattlesnake Mountain site. Officials said the measure aims to protect a presidential residence and immediate area from intrusive air traffic.
Robert Lee Dolan, 32, of 306 Joseph St., received an 11 day extension in city jail for an escape. City Police Court Judge Joe Thomas ordered that after the extra term, Dolan begin serving the remaining portion of his original sentence.
The House approved the wages and hours bill by an 86 to 10 vote on Wednesday. Democrats supporting the measure numbered 64 with numerous names listed. several Democrats opposed and a small bloc of Republicans supported. Absent members totaled four, all Democrats.
Huntington's Langdon wrote and published a ballad titled West Virginia Moon. The sheet music with a painting cover is distributed to newspapers, depicting the song as a tribute to home and reunion. Separately, Belgian officials announce Prime Minister Cyrille Adoula will visit Belgium February 23 to 29 for talks on political and economic issues.
