About 3,800 people gathered at a Selma church as state troopers ordered dispersal after a march toward the Perry County jail. Beatings followed and 26 year old Jimmy Lee Jackson was shot in the stomach, listed in very critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital Selma.
Valdemar Hanson, a Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus employee from Venice, Florida, was kicked in the face by a horse Thursday night. He is treated at Charleston General Hospital for a facial laceration in satisfactory condition as the circus performs at the Grand Arena in the Civic Center.
Kanawha Trail Club will hike Sunday afternoon starting at the club lodge on the Kanawha State Forest border. Cleve Meador leads an extended stroll up Middle Hick to Wall Hollow then ridge top, down to Hoffman Creek, to Middle Lick and back to the lodge. Meet at 1:30 near Broad Street and Kanawha Boulevard, then go to the lodge.
A girl suffered a fractured right forearm while riding a sidewalk surfboard and is being treated at Charleston General Hospital. Jackie Fletcher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fletcher of Wrightwood Drive, has the injuries in stable condition after the incident.
The Rast Crass bloodmobile visit scheduled for Wednesday at Ruff ver Memorial Church is being changed. The hours are from 10 a.m. to p.m. The B nai B r Synagogue Virginia and Elizabeth directs.
Roy Wilkins, NAACP executive secretary, sent telegrams to branches urging peaceful city hall demonstrations to protest Alabama and Mississippi denial of registration and voting. He said no set time, individuals to arrange locally, likely starting next week, not directed at city officials. Charleston NAACP president Willard Brown confirmed telegrams and board support.
Fire department responded to multiple calls with no damage in most cases. Incidents include paper fire at 1012 Beach Ave causing no damage and grease fire at 1688 Quarrier St causing 25 dollars damage. Other sites include 11a Franklin Ave for aaron fire with 50 dollars damage and Virginia Court streets with an assistance call and no damage.
About 35 employees of Purity Baking Co in Charleston will be transferred to Bristol Tennessee operations by year end. The plant at 1007 Bigley Ave will continue bread making. Affected workers are in the cake and pie department.

Dallas doctors performed a rare double kidney transplant from a dead donor to two women, Mrs. Sylvia Shartz, 40, and Mrs. Mary Ellen Crawford, 22. Three surgical teams operated for about five hours before dawn, replacing kidneys to extend their lives after fatal illness.
NASA reported Mariner 4 crossed 20 million miles from Earth on its flight to Mars. At 3 p.m. the craft was 20,081,539 miles away and receding at 18,718 miles per hour. The probe aims to photograph Mars in mid July, with a planned November launch date noted.
A Charleston General Hospital pathologist concluded there is no evidence of foul play in the death of Marlene Boudinot 31 of Parkersburg found in a field near Spencer after escaping Spencer State Hospital with William Nelson 38 of Brounland. Nelson remains at large while two other escapees have been recaptured. Spencer State Hospital Supt B A Litsinger said Nelson was not considered dangerous and had escaped previously.
Washington senators push a Cold War GI bill for veterans serving six months between Jan 31 1955 and July 1 1967. It would provide education and vocational training benefits and direct home loans similar to World War I and Korean veterans. Sen Byrd and Sen Randolph support the measure.
The $173,000 Social Security district office will be built at Virginia Avenue and Broad Street in Welch. Construction starts late this summer. Announcement came from Sen. Roberts Byrd Jennings Randolph and Rep. Kee. The Welch site will host about 900,000 in monthly disability benefits and staff the Dunbar public library, with Mrs. Denton and Mrs. Kelley noted in caption.
