WALDO Fla Feb 19 An army airplane pilot watched a companion crash to his death in Lake Santa Fe then wrecked his plane on landing in a futile rescue. Second Lieut Theodore Proxmire Jr of Lake Forest Ill drowned in 15 feet of water. Second Lieut Budd Marks of Minneapolis escaped as his craft nosed over during a landing to aid. The crash was blamed on defective aircraft by Marks, with eyewitness H G Cooper noting the motor failed.
Eighteen leading tire manufacturers face federal suits in New York alleging conspired price fixing on government tire contracts over 18 months. The government claims overcharges from 33 cents to 22.65 per tire for purchases between Oct 1, 1936 and March 31, 1938, with bids repeated across bidders.
A driverless freight engine rolled down a downgrade for over five miles before slamming into a Minneapolis bound passenger train near Shelby Iowa.
