An autopsy by county coroner Dr. W F Work found the child strangled with water and blood in the lungs. An inquest impaneled an coroner's jury at the residence led to the holding. Deputies Cavender and Carnes took her to jail. A neighbor first raised concern after the second infant death in the family within days. The elder mother had attributed the earlier death to the infant. The two women lived with their grandfather in a bare, floorless old log barn.
