House Debates Budget Amendments and Votes Largely Along Party Lines
The House spent about two and a half hours debating budget bill amendments with only one passing. Democrat Del. James McNeely proposed a 10000 cut to Interstate Mining Compact Commission funds, a gesture against a closed door meeting in a motel room with Ben Lusk of the West Virginia Surface Mining and Reclamation Assn. The amendment failed. Minority amendments sought restoring funding for the State Department of Highways, Public Service Commission, and new programs that had been zeroed. The majority again allocated nothing to several agencies to allow language in supplemental bills later. Minority Leader George Seibert’s bid to send the budget bill back to finance committee failed 48 to 14. The House comprises 86 Democrats and 14 Republicans. Three minor bills were sent to the Governor. The roll calls show several Democrats and one Republican voting on branch banking and anti bank holding company amendments as listed. The finance committee postponed indefinitely a bill to allow public employees to unionize by a 12-11 vote with several absences.

Fire destroys over 40 pianos on West Virginia Turnpike
A tractor-trailer carrying 42 pianos from Baldwin Piano Co of Cincinnati caught fire near the Memorial Tunnel on Interstate 68. More than 40 pianos valued at $63,000 were burned, with about $1,000 damage to the truck. Marmet volunteers fought the blaze, diverting traffic for over three hours.
