Richmond dispatch reports schools across 18 counties closed due to severe weather. A group of suburban residents waited for a bus when a taxi driver explained the bus was not operating today because of poor road conditions, then left.
West Virginia endures 11th day of sub freezing conditions as 18 counties shut schools. A state of emergency in Oak Hill and Fayetteville prompts Cabot Inc to urge thermostat limits to 55 degrees and offer five Fayette County schools for temporary use. Gas supply slowly restored as rivers freeze for first time in a decade, halting traffic and stressing fuel demand.
An epic cold wave gripping the eastern third of the nation slows life to a crawl. States report record snows with New York, Boston and Washington locked in heavy drift and transport paralysis. Deaths from exposure and related causes mount as temperatures plunge to near record lows.
A sweeping East Coast blizzard traps travelers and families while supplies run short. From Narrowsburg to Washington motorists grip horns at a stuck snow plow as crews clear routes. In Lansdale a grandfather guides a birth over the phone during heavy drifts. A Pan-American Circus is towed by elephants near White Plains. In Maryland newlyweds endure a wedding night at Ascension Church with relatives nearby. Berrien County votes a snow resolution as midwinter snow blankets the region. Snowbound ski club members in Bennington seek shelter while a meeting speaker in York misses due to the storm.
President Eisenhower charges Bulganin and Khrushchev with false attacks and sabotaging East West talks. He brands the Moscow summit formula ludicrous and says a top level conference would end with both sides glaring silently at each other. Khrushchev’s Minsk speech is cited as false U.S. propaganda.
Washington February 17 INS House investigators released two 1953 letters from Presidential Assistant Sherman Adams showing intervention in a Civil Aeronautics Board case for Vice President Nixon's former campaign manager. Adams offered to assist and signed Sherman. The letters surfaced during a hearing of the subcommittee on legislative oversight after Mamie Eisenhower's brother in law was linked to National Airlines license action in Miami. An affidavit from Colonel A Frank Kalsentine supported the aviation matter.
Two proposed ordinances aim to create censorship boards in the city. One, by Councilman Crichton, would appoint a mayoral board. the other contemplates a five member panel drawn from five city agencies. Both drafts call for injunctive actions over police raids. The proposals spurred debate amid snowbound attendance and covered topics beyond censorship, including gas bills and railroad crossings.
Patricia Ellen Lantz of Frank, a 16 year old missing Pocahontas girl, was found today living near Milton under an assumed name. State Police Sgt. W E Webb said she was picked up at a Nazarene minister's relative's home. The minister Rev Raymond Carpenter and his wife faced preliminary action on abduction charges related to the disappearance.
