Eight men and four women perished near the rear door while two men a woman and a child escaped via the front. Soldier Receives Silver Star From Governor
Sgt. Joseph W. Johnson Jr. of Fayetteville received the Silver Star from Gov. Hulett Smith at the State Capitol on Friday for gallantry in Vietnam. A member of the 71st Artillery, he was wounded in July when his position was attacked by the Viet Cong, refused evacuation, and continued fighting as the enemy was repulsed.
