Lunar photographs show site near lunar equator suitable for manned landings
The lunar Orbiter photographs indicate a smooth area near the equator with few large craters, suitable for future manned landings. Images from Orbiter 3 taken after launch from Cape Kennedy show rocky debris and dark spots, while tracking stations in Spain and Goldstone relay data. Two more orbiters are planned to photograph 12 sites in the year ahead.
