Flurries expected Thursday over West Virginia and much of the Northeast tapering to rain along the coast. Showers likely in southern Florida and the Pacific Northwest with additional snow forecast for the Rocky Mountain states North Dakota and Minnesota.
Forecasts show cloudy windy and cold conditions with snow flurries across zones 1 9 and western Pennsylvania Virginia Ohio and Kentucky. Highs range from the upper teens to the low 40s and nightly lows from the teens to the 30s with imagery of continued snow flurries and varying cloudiness.
Air Force 1st Lt William Y Arcuri reunites with his wife as 20 returning POWs depart Clark Air Base. Dispersal plans send men to Oakland and San Francisco hospitals, air evacuation to Southern California, or refueling for a flight to Scott AFB near St Louis, then to Eastern and Southwestern hospitals. Two additional POWs were sped to their mothers bedside in California and Minnesota.
State budget requests show Health Department allocations rising to 3.9 million with increases in mental health and welfare. Hospitals receive higher funds for Guthrie, Weston, Huntington, and other facilities, while line items cover food stamps medical programs and museum relocation costs.
The USS Sanctuary, a hospital ship, removed its first pregnant crew member from duty in San Francisco for medical reasons. The unnamed seaman held deck duties and the pregnancy arose after joining the ship’s initial crew in mid December. Navy officials mention a suspected romance on board and note married couples cannot serve together on the same vessel.
Franklin Delano Haddox 30 of Rand died after an overdose of a pain killer the day he arrived at Charleston Memorial Hospital. Haddox a Capitol Light Co. salesman and Vietnam veteran is survived by a wife, parents, brothers, sisters and stepsister. body at Stephens Funeral Home in Malden with call after 1 p.m. Thursday.
Peyton notes BIDCO moved to grow its 17 member firms paying 100 dollars yearly and seeks mutual membership with the Committee of 100. He became chair as talks include converting all Committee of 100 members to BIDCO members while detailing new officers and board seats.
Three year old Frederick Scott Wilson of Ripley dies in Charleston General Hospital after a Monday two car crash near Ripley. His mother Sheila Wilson remains in fair condition.Dorothy M. Mitchell 42 of Ripley dies in the crash at U S 21 and I 77. Services for Mitchell held in Ripley. The child's service set for Friday at Caston Funeral Home Evans with burial at Otterview Cemetery.
Logan County authorities report Charles Barker 80 of Clothier killed and his wife Anna 75 critically injured in a three car crash on Logan Boulevard around 1 p.m. Wednesday. Drivers Earl Bryant 21 of Logan and Jack E Fortune of West Logan escaped injury. Mrs Barker drove the vehicle.
In the State of the State message Moore outlines a $200 million school bond program with a $100,000 flat county allocation and a two part distribution by enrollment and inverse ability. The plan also includes raises for school staff, a new Marshall medical school, tuition support for private colleges, mental health funding, federal revenue sharing use, and new fees on cars refrigerators stoves and tires to fund programs.
Robert H. Handley of Citizens to Abolish Strip Mining challenged Gov. Moore’s proposal to spend 2 million to reclaim orphan strip mined land. Handley argued public funds should not back reclamation and urged a commission to study its effectiveness before any action.
In Salt Rock near Wayne County a 5 month old boy named Terry Stevens died when a one story frame dwelling caught fire. Two other children aged 2 and 4 escaped with a passerby helping the girl to safety. Authorities had not yet determined the fire's cause.
The governor advocates a 65plus homestead exemption, redefines Public Safety with 100 new state troopers, food tax relief up to 1.50, a state public defender office with county offices, 1.1 million for West Virginia Penitentiary improvements, a Vietnam veterans bonus, and 2.5 million for a new legislative building with offices parking and a cafeteria. An appeal to lawmakers followed with applause.
Dennis Fields aged 13 of 5611 Kanawha Turnpike was treated at Thomas Memorial Hospital after being struck by a car near the Kentucky Fried Chicken on MacCorkle Avenue. Police said the driver was Charles Bradley, 49, of Buffalo Putnam County. no charges were filed.
