National Democratic leaders urged harmony as the 1932 campaign began with a Roosevelt drive leading the field. Uninstructed delegates and regional figures debated strategy while calls echoed for unity to avoid a 1924-style intraparty clash.
Lekrote with Okey Myera narrowly survived a wreck when his automobile plunged off the road at Runner venue Kanawha Street. He was thrown clear, aided by bystanders, and treated for a leg injury at Mountain State Hospital before release. Authorities Lt Arch Brown and Capt Claud Baldwin investigated noting a sudden stop by a light roadster in front of another car.
West Virginia politics heat up as alignments form for the May primary. A February 24 Charleston meeting aims to organize support for Franklin D. Roosevelt for the Democratic presidential nomination, the first move toward national convention delegates. Republicans show no opposition to Hoover's renomination. Leaders include R. Figiey Dunlap of Hinton and State Senator Clyde Beecher Johnson of Charleston.
J B Bush of South Charleston announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for state superintendent of schools. The veteran educator, born in Gilmer County, holds degrees from West Virginia University and studied at Vanderbilt and Pittsburgh. He led Rural and Normal schools, served on the state board of education, and held national and regional education roles.
Ashland Kentucky February 13 two children Johnnie Brown five and Frankie DeHart eight months died in a house fire at Summit area. Their mother Mrs Everett DeHart was downstairs when she heard a roaring upstairs and could not reach the children as flames drove them from the home. Neighbors tried to rescue them but the fire destroyed the dwelling. Origin of the blaze was undetermined.
The scattered state departments are being gathered again after a century of relocation from fire damaged walls. The new main unit features a Roman style exterior with a blue dome and marble rotundas. Architect Castle Gilbert guides the redesign blending Renaissance influence with Roman forms.
New York reports a brisk market session driven by gains across the top issues. Union Pacific surges $21.50 to 97.50 then settles near 88.82, American Telephone climbs $15.75 to 144, and other blue chips hit new highs as traders hope the bottom is in.
Washington February 13 The House moves to clear rules for Monday consideration of the Clase Steagall bill to loosen Federal Reserve credit machinery Rep Rainey leads the push amid possible suspension of rules and a two thirds vote may be required The Senate Banking Committee backs the bill with a plan to ease bank credit and reduce failures by allowing government securities to be used for rediscount See page 4 part 2 column 7 for full report
Beginning tomorrow morning the John Brawley post Ameriart Legion will canvass Charleston and vicinity to place unemployed men. Every member will call on offices residences and industries urging repairs painting and building work and pressing industrial plants to hire as many workers as possible.
Police report ten masked men invaded Balls grocery at closing time and threatened four employees. A separate Cab driver robbery occurred on Fayette street as two men with a pistol fled with cash. The Belle Kroger hold up, linked to similar six week incidents, used improvised blue masks and an abandoned car tied to Route No 4 in Albans.
Lymien Burl Young 28 Mount Hope schoolteacher and Omar Young’s brother died when the car they rode in overturned near Raleigh Roundabout around one this morning. GC Moore of Mount Hope was critically injured and taken to Raleigh General Hospital. Youngs neck was broken and Moore suffered multiple injuries.
Pineville February 13 41 Ross Cook 49 of Balleyville near here was acquitted today of charges of murdering Curtis Leak 22 of Big Stone Gap Virginia. Cook’s defense rested on a plea of temporary insanity after officials say he looked through a window of his home and saw Leak with his daughter.
In Beckley on February 13 a surgeon removed a three inch bone fragment from Miss Pendite Parker, a victim of an explosion at Stanford two weeks earlier. Additional foreign bone pieces were found in her right leg as doctors linked the blast to the earlier fatal incident.
Joseph Wehrle 73 died after a long illness at his home on Blmwood Avenue. His body lies in state at First Presbyterian Church before funeral services this afternoon at three o clock. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery with Rev. Ernest Thompson and Rev. D R Bitzer officiating. Pallbearers include G Savage W Savage J Malone and others. honorary pallbearers listed. Mr Weblie known to thousands in this region. he retired from lumber business ten years ago and owned farms near Cherieston.
A man identified as Hupter died by suicide during a hunting outing near Sutton on February date. Police say the incident occurred after a weapon discharged accidentally, ending the life of the hunter. Local authorities are investigating the death and notifying next of kin.
A dispatch from the scene reports both sides sending fresh troops and stronger resistance. Japan expands naval, air, and land forces, raising concerns in the international settlement despite assurances from Admiral Nomura that bombing planes won’t fly over American territory. Admiral Taylor asks for tracked plane numbers.
