Washington February 12 The Ways and Means Committee chaired by Robert L Coughton and Harold Knutson pledged immediate work on simplifying the individual income tax and its returns for 50 million taxpayers. They emphasized that March 15 returns may be eased but March 25 returns must be filed under present law. The statement signals a first sustained focus on income tax simplification in 16 years.

Nineteen men died when three planes of a bomber group collided during a weekly Saturday formation at Greenville army air base in South Carolina. Colonel Fllsworth Rudesill longtime Charleston leader died of pneumonia in a local hospital aged 82. He served as mayor 1904 to 1908 and was active in the city collector’s office. Services set for 2 pm at Barlow mortuary chapel with Dr. Harry S. Longley officiating. Burial in Mountain View cemetery. Rudesill born Medina Ohio October 10, 1861, moved to Charleston in 1889 and helped found Charleston Lodge BPOE in 1893, later leading the reorganized lodge in 1903. He married Alice Cromley in 1885.
State Department announced an exchange plan for Americans trapped in Germany tied to France’s occupied zone. U S diplomats and some reporters relief workers and South American officials will be swapped for German consular staff in North Africa and Italy plus non official Germans. The swap, to be arranged at Lisbon in June, involves Swedish mediator Mats Holm as go‑between.
