In Jersey City, a 17 year old novice motorist abducted by a gunman died in flames after her car crashed through a police roadblock at 70 mph. Police say the kidnapper also perished in the blaze amid the chaotic incident.
A high Navy source said U S evacuation of the Tachen Islands is in the critical phase for war or peace. If Communist air or long range artillery attack occurs now through the operation’s end, action is possible. Nationalist troops and equipment are loading onto ships as defenses may be temporarily disorganized. The evacuation could finish by Monday or sooner, with U S forces ready to strike at any interference from the Communists.
Kanawha County schools may vote May 10 on a new property tax levy to run three years replacing the expiring levy. Proposed rates range from 3.49 to 14.63 cents per $100 of value on all county property.
