Desperate Socialist troops try to reopen the Madrid Valencia supply route as rebels claim to have won yesterday’s fights along the highway. Government forces reportedly suffered heavy losses and abandoned supplies, while dispatches suggest the insurgents had not yet severed the main route to the sea.
Government officials submitted an estimate of 277921 for flood damage repair and reconstruction at Marshall College. The plan calls for 108420 for new first floors, 46000 to raise buildings, 54000 for flood repairs, and 3501 for architect fees, with 116006.55 from the state.
Detroit AP report says GM strikes near settlement with talks led by Gov Murphy and union leaders. MEMPETe Tenn Feb 10 An anxious but confident watch on the levees of the lower Mississippi river was redoubled as the crest of the flood crept toward Helena Vicksburg and New Orleans. Upstream the Beuges fell lowering concern for Cairo while crews sandbagged weak spots and raised levees downstream. About 83 486 refugees were in Red Cross care with 3 000 000 planned for relief to 14 705 families to rebuild homes and furnish their devastation.
SOMERSET Pa Feb 10 A Uniontown plan testified that external violence caused the death of 64 year old Frank C Monaghan the Uniontown hotel man whom the commonwealth contends was brutally and barbarously beaten to death. Herbert J Lund a youthful Pathologist at Uniontown hospital listed seven conditions which in his opinion resulted in the death for which 25 year old State Trooper Stacey Gunderman and six other officers face murder charges. Margiotti won permission to show jury pictures of Monaghan s body to support the physician s testimony. Lund testified death resulted from hemorrhage of the brain multiple fracture of ribs free blood in the chest cavity fractured jaw and hose inhaling of blood into the respiratory system shock. The physician testified that Monaghan s death was not due to heart disease contradicting the coroner s opinion that death was caused by heart disease superinduced by acute alcoholism. He described 11 fractures skull and jaw and used sketches to illustrate his testimony. Margiotti prepared to bring scores of witnesses to prove Monaghan s death came from great violence and pain by fists and blunt instruments. President Roosevelt asked Congress to back a new plan to reclaim the semi arid plains between Canada and the Mississippi with a constructive action program. He urged a federal agency to coordinate land and water conservation, land purchases, larger farms, and surveys to identify plow land, grass land, and untouched ranges, with 24 million acres potentially acquired and resettlement contemplated.

In Appleton Wisconsin on February 19 farmer Romberg sued two fox farm operators claiming they swapped a sorrel horse for the black one he sold them. Defendants said they were told to shoot the bandaged leg horse. The judge ruled it a horse apiece and denied damages.
In New York on February 10 1937 Ramona known on stage and radio as Ramona Davies petitioned the supreme court to end a contract with Paul Whiteman claiming she receives 125 dollars a week for inanimate chatter under his whims and wishes.
Bishop Edwin Duboze Mouzon 68, senior Methodist Episcopal South bishop, died suddenly of a heart ailment at his Charlotte home after returning from a southern church mission. A leading advocate for Methodist unification, he was noted for his 1928 stand against Alfred B. Smith and his lifelong commitment to church merger efforts.
Ash Wednesday marked the start of Lent with special services held yesterday at Catholic, Episcopal, and Lutheran churches across the city. Many Charlestonians joined in the observance, beginning six weeks of penitence and reflection.

State police said the man held here in connection with the Charles Mattson kidnapping is a former San Quentin inmate known as H A Past and James McDonald. Federal agents also declined comment as investigation broadens. The suspect, arrested yesterday, denied knowledge of the case as officers pursued a red headed woman and other persons suspected by authorities.
In Orizaba Veracruz State loyal Catholics resumed possession of 14 churches closed for 16 years launching a Lent protest against church seizures and the government socialization education plan. A deadly raid killed a 14 year old girl prompting crowds of about 15 000 to demonstrate.
