CORE leader Floyd B. McKissick addressed Marshall University students urging blacks to pursue nationalism, new concepts, and practical solutions while warning whites not to mistreat them. He insisted on black rights and humanity, challenging white audiences to address systemic injustice without violence.
Morris Harvey Publications unveils Poems From the Hills 1970 at a Charleston ferry conference on February 2. Poets include Jesse Stuart, Roy Lee Harmon, Louise McNeill Pease, Ruth Ann MuSick, Doris C Miller, and Jane Lisko among 41 contributors. The event features author on hand readings, autographing, and awards for best poetry in the anthology.
A railroad crossing in northern Mingo County claimed three lives in as many days. Freddy Gale Daniels, 18, of Franklin New Jersey, stalled on the tracks and was struck by a train, though he saved four passengers including his newlywed wife Patricia and her baby. Later, Aliie Marcum Ferguson, 35, of Kermit died from injuries after a collision at the same crossing. Linda Messer, 18, of Plains Ohio, also died. State police say the crossing has no special hazard.
Clyde Ervin Snyder of Davis Creek was granted a 90 day stay to appeal his rape conviction from Kanawha Intermediate Court. Judge George W. Wood resentenced him to 10 to 20 years with credit for time served and overruled a new trial motion. Also sentenced were Douglas F. Hodge on probation for breaking and entering and Virgil Norman Back Jr. on probation reinstatement petition denied and sentenced to 5 to 18 years for unarmed robbery.
DAVIS-i state commerce commissioner Lysander L Dudley crowned Gail Louise Rabold 20 of Ephrata PA queen of the 10th annual Tucker County Alpine Festival Gail a junior at Davis & Elkins College was crowned Thursday night Stephanie Anne Donolwicz 20 of Weirton a junior at West Liberty State College named first runner up The winter festival runs through Sunday.
Valley Bell Dairy Co. completes acquisition of Bonham Dairy in Charleston area, employing about 25 fulltime workers. The merger expands West Virginia dairy capacity as J William Martin and Leonard Martin lead the deal with Bonham family representative Fisher Bonham. Martin notes no purchase price disclosed and signals plans to operate the firm as is while supporting regional business expansion.
Since 1968 Robert Payne 19 of 2128 Lippert St had probation reinstated after a strong judge reprimand for leaving the state without court permission. Wood set trial dates for William Terrell Greenwood on a worthless check charge and ordered medical exams for Thomas Whittington on breaking and entering. Whittington 23 of the Tourist Hotel had a preliminary hearing in Municipal Court Friday. Judge Charnock continued the case to Feb 20. Plymouth Montserrat reports the island’s first telephone booth with five more planned.
