Grand jury action against Farris Tabet a noted Charleston gambler was ordered yesterday. He was released on a 1500 dollar appearance bond after waiving a preliminary hearing before Justice H L Isr ell. Police described Tabet as a top overlord of local vice with raids targeting his establishments for years.
Paul S Edens a 5 salesman of 263 Elm St is the first 1952 primary election fraud defendant brought to trial in Intermediate Court jury arraigned on charges of falsifying precinct returns. Prosecutors say ballots were not counted and Edens altered returns crediting Copenhaver with 73 votes though 64 were actual. Edens contends any discrepancy was unintentional as he defends lack of prior trouble and denial of any intent to influence outcomes. Evidence focuses on primary mechanics and precinct certificates from DB Pitt O Brien secretary of state Paul E Wehrle county clerk M H Hix circuit clerk and Mont Cavender.
A New York General Sessions judge threatened a news blackout of Pat Ward’s lead-off testimony in a high profile vice trial. The defense pressed for an open hearing while Ward’s age and safety prompted concerns over exposing her to public scrutiny. Reporters reported the judge later reconsidered his order during a recess. Lyons quoted relifives and members of the family that Sow der had been low in spirits since he was notified about a month ago that his home lay in the path of the proposed turnpike.
