The Copper Tire and Rubber Co of Findlay Ohio recalls about 28 000 Hercules Softpreme Raybelt passenger tires manufactured late 1969 to early 1970. NHTSA says the tires do not meet safety standards.
A House judiciary subcommittee led by Rep. William L. Hungate plans hearings on new federal evidence rules set to take effect July 1. Senate action is pending as Sen. Sam J. Ervin Jr. seeks delay to study the unified rules for civil and criminal trials.
Ronnie Edward Kelley of Rt. 4 Charleston and Marvin D. Slater of Truslow St. were treated for stab wounds after an altercation Sunday at the Terminal Cafe at Fourth and Bream streets. Police said both were released from Charleston General Hospital and no charges were filed.

Inmates at McDowell County jail carved daggers from metal strips taken from walls and ceilings and attached handles from broom parts. The weapons were seized, two inmates isolated, and prison-wide searches conducted. The county plans funds from a federal revenue program for a new jail.

Memphis police say three members of the Myers family were found slain in a North Memphis house after a fire. Arthur Myers Jr. 26 and Marilyn Myers 26 were shot in the head, with Arthur’s throat cut. Huron Myers 20 was beaten, jaw broken, teeth knocked out. Motive and order of killings undetermined.
Eight business owners from Charleston's Fast Side petition Senator Jennings Randolph to push the state legislature to pass a compensation law for those displaced by the Capitol Complex expansion. They seek full loss compensation beyond moving costs, citing the 1971 Uniform Relocation Act as a model and contacting state officials for support.
Fred H. Durham aged 81 of Pacific Street was found dead in an alley off Young Street at 9 50 p m Saturday with no foul play suspected. A retired miner and longtime Charleston resident, he belonged to the Baptist Church. Survived by wife Sarah of Ashland Ky. daughters Doris Horton and Jean Hatfield of Ashland Ky Roberta Gibson of Detroit Mich. sons Joseph of Detroit Mich David of Columbus Ohio. 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The National Labor Relations Board schedules elections to decide if West Virginia Newspaper Publishing Co employees will be represented by The Newspaper Guild. Employees will vote Wednesday and Thursday in Morgantown West Virginia.
Thelma Rosetta Pritt 16 of Smithers died at Montgomery General Hospital after a Saturday crash on West Virginia 61 near Handley Kanawha County. Passenger in a car driven by 17 year old William Fair Jr. Hawkins and Petry also injured. Funeral service Tuesday at O'Dell Funeral Home Montgomery with burial at Spring Hill Charleston.
