He said on his word of honor he has no facts about the crime or its circumstances. The governor approved Bowen questioning and an impartial prison inquiry into Stateville. Leopold defended Loeb and himself against being termed pentients and said life in prison has grown stricter with hard labor and routine. Funeral Set For D. E. French Former West Virginia Senator
BLUEFIELD Feb. 1 Funeral services for D. E. French 64 former state senator will be held tomorrow. The attorney and banker who ran for the Democratic nomination in 1918 died last night of heart disease. Born in Giles County Virginia he settled in Bluefield about 40 years ago. He is survived by his widow and six children. French formed a triple interest in law banking and politics and was instrumental in forming the Bank of Keystone now First National Bank of Bluefield and later president of Bluefield National Bank. He also served eight years as city attorney and represented his district in the state senate in 1910. Turn to Page 4 Part 1.

COLUMBUS OH Feb 1 An authority on silicases disputes today’s charges that silicosis caused 476 deaths on the Hawks Nest project in West Virginia. Dr Emery R Hayhurst of the Ohio Health Department said he doubts more than 20 were caused directly by the disease and noted some victims died from tuberculosis or pneumonia after exposure. He cited a reading of the Hawk’s Nest commission findings and warned that dust exposure effects vary with time and individual susceptibility. The dispute follows Rep Vito Marcantonio’s assertion that 476 workers died and 3,800 more were dying from silicosis or related causes.

Montgomery February 1 Frank Clark changed his story about killing his wife with an ax claiming drunken impulse after an argument over illness. Deput Sheriff Clyde Harler said Clark, a miner, told him the act occurred Tuesday night and he planned to be arraigned Monday on murder charges. Neighbors say Mrs. Clark, 40, lay dead in their Kingston coal camp home as the front of her skull showed heavy injury. Clark cited washing dishes and chores then going to the mines as contributing factors to the tragedy.
