San Francisco December 40. Lieutenant General Hunter Liggett, age 78, a World War I hero who served 42 years total with the U S Army, died today from heart disease. His wife Harriet Lane Liggett was at his bedside. He earned the Distinguished Service Medal for his France service commanding the First Army in the American Expeditionary Forces and received top decorations from Great Britain, France, Belgium and Portugal. General Pershing expressed deep grief, noting Liggett’s leadership in major engagements in France and his strong character. Liggett retired in 1921 and had made his home in San Francisco since.
