Washington dec 26 President William Green of the American Federation of Labor reports unemployment increasing faster than any time since last January in its monthly survey. He notes 22 8 percent of AFL members were jobless in December up from 22 0 in November and 21 0 in October. Green says industry shrinking effort to hire and that workers are being dropped from payrolls so government can provide care, with millions employed by civil works. He cites total unemployed 19 702 900 in November, up 580 08 from October, versus a peak 12 689 000 in March, and suggests year end layoffs may be harsher due to administration focus on jobs.
In San Juan Puerto Rico 200 reserves were called to quell chaos from a gasoline price protest that shut traffic and halted streetcars and buses. Public vehicle drivers quit, hundreds of downtown shoppers stranded, and 150 tourists from New Jersey and New York faced delays as lines froze and local stores closed for the noon pause. NRA coordinator Boaz Long planned actions as drivers refused to run.

Chairman Robert Gowthrop of the new liquor control board said prices are below those in Ontario and cited several concrete examples including Teachers High Grade Creamery 3.85 versus Pennsylvania 3. yatte Horse Scotch Ontario 4.05 and Hennessy Three Star brandy Ontario 4.75 versus Pennsylvania 4.00. The Seagram Sa Canadian rye whiskey, selling in Ontario for 2 200, would bring 2 25 in Pennsylvania, Gowthrop noted, arguing the 45 cent differential when duties and transport are counted.
Washington reports that all West Virginia state banks will be eligible for the federal deposit guarantee program when it begins next year. PINEVILLE December 28 Pur chase of coal properties of the Corinne Fuel company near Mullens with a name change to the Blue Eagle Smokeless Coal company to begin operations after January was announced by John W. Smith of Beckley vice president and general manager of the new concern. Smith and his father J Q Smith of Princeton head the venture plan to open a new seat of coal in the old Corinne properties idle for years. About 150 men are expected to be employed.
Benjamin Lebowicz waited in El Morado Arkansas for a telephonic wedding to Miny Hermina Weisz in Prague Czechoslovakia. Officials said proof of U S citizenship was required for both parties and the ceremony could not proceed until the American consul general could verify Lebowicz’s naturalization in Chicago. Weisz returned home pending clearance as childhood sweethearts who had exchanged letters during the long wait.
President Roosevelt, addressing Wilson’s birth anniversary, declares the United States will not join the League of Nations and will oppose armed intervention. He presents a three point plan for world peace, urging eliminations of offensive weapons and a gradual disarmament, while praising aspects of the League’s work.
