A gun battle at Salem Indiana left Otis Gibson dead and three officers wounded as four brothers stormed the county jail to free Pleas Spurlock and brother in connection with the December 14 death of Patton Gibson. Otis stood guard at the entrance while the others fired. two officers were seriously hurt and the three brothers escaped into the night. The feud, rooted in Tennessee, intensified after the fatal shooting two weeks earlier.
Huntington December 27 A 26 year old Black man Wesley Calvin Huntington grocer is held as the slayer of Alderon Bowen Bowen's daughter in law identified him as one of two Black intruders who entered the store after closing hours struck Bowen and fled without taking goods state and city police along with American Legion began roundup of suspicious characters in the Engro pections of tha veaty.
In WEIRELING on December 27 strong winds drove snowdrifts to three to four feet on rural roads in the northern panhandle. Road crews used snow plows to reopen routes and grade crossings were salted.

James Dunn of Grandview 6 was sentenced by Judge James P. Shipman in Tyler County circuit court to five years in the West Virginia penitentiary at Maundenville for voluntary manslaughter in the death of Garlan Bayless 3. Dunn’s trial, the longest in Tyler County history at 24 days, followed indictments with Patrick Henry Charles Henry and Clyde McBee. jury had earlier split on the first trial of Patrick Henry. Dunn, who spoke briefly about schooling and whisky, received the maximum penalty after the court noted the jury’s consideration in the Bayless case. The Bayless killing occurred during a drinking party at Granview Island near Obiq river Sep. 2.
Paris reports Marshal Joffre, famed for halting the German advance at the Marne, grave after leg amputation. Gangrene threatened life as doctors warned the veteran's condition was deteriorating. Madame Joffre guarded the news amid the crisis at St. Jean de Dieu hospital.
Mrs Theresa Dagus wife of W Glenn Dagus who was convicted with Mrs Ines Bedrosher for the murder of Mighney Patrumen Fredy Paul visited her husband at the Lawrence county jail. The visit followed a holdup on the Newcastl Butler highway a year ago. Dagus and Bedrosher were sentenced to death after conviction for first degree murder and their appeals failed. The execution date was set for February.
Robert W. Williams, a University of Texas sophomore, is charged with murder over a shooting linked to a lovers quarrel. Williams, reported hysterical after the incident, claimed self defense and described taking the weapon for protection. The victim, Miss Johnson, died from a chest wound. Williams said their dispute ended when a ride to Rev. Flynn’s office failed to resolve the issues.
Mary M Watkins born March 31 1849 in Charleston was the elder Gebhart relation with ties to John Tyler Virginia presidency.
