Charleston's street department works around the clock to keep major hill access roads open after Christmas Day as seven inches of snow fall. City Manager Vincent Reisman says salt deliveries failed on the holiday, crews had to fetch salt from St Albans, and overtime plus salt costs mount while valley streets wait.
Allied spokesmen said three Americans wounded as South Vietnamese losses continued. Early today Viet Cong were reported 12 killed, 25 wounded, and two missing with 11 captured. The U S Command noted about 100 enemy killed in the period.
Smoky, the two year old mascot dog of Fire Engine Company 45, disappeared during a three alarm store blaze in New York. He was found by children and taken to another firehouse where an alarm sounded, and he rode back to the original unit on a fire truck. Firefighters cheered as Smoky returned to his post in his customary place.
The U S Command said ground fighting was generally scattered across the country on Friday while U S B52 bombers carried out at least six missions.
The 1st Infantry Division of the U S Army, about 18,000 troops, operating 150 miles north of Saigon in Bing Duong and Binh Long, is cited for the next pullout under Nixon's plan to cut 50,000 U S troops. The unit has participated in Dong Tien progress with South Vietnamese forces since last July as part of Vietnamization.
Marie and Joseph Smith couple buried in Spring Hill Cemetery had planted a pine sapling as a Christmas monument to their era. Their daughter Clara Dickerson found the tree missing on Christmas morning leaving only the stump. Cemetery sextant Bill Byus noted recent vandalism and repeated break-ins at the cemetery this fall and winter.
Not prepared to give up, Perot concedes failure of the Christmas mission to aid orphans. A plan proposed mail service for North Vietnamese prisoners in South Vietnam. Earlier Perot and United We Stand sought a meeting with Col. Seth Pet rasi of Pathet Lao in Vientiane but were turned away at the villa gate with a promise of a future appointment. Perot debated staying in Vientiane as one of two chartered planes, Peace on Earth, awaited maintenance in Bangkok.
Los Angeles reports Charles Manson plans to fund his defense in the Sharon Tate murder case with proceeds from a phonograph album he allegedly recorded before his arrest. Attorney George Shibley said Manson claimed the record contains songs he wrote and accompanies himself on guitar. The name of a recording company or release date was not known.
A former Charleston resident cited in the New England Journal of Medicine argues that medical disparities against Black residents stem from a prejudicial system rooted in slavery. Dr. John C. Norman links lower life expectancy and higher maternal mortality to entrenched social, political, and economic constraints that trap inner city residents in cycles of disadvantage.
Israeli warplanes pounded Egyptian missile sites and hit targets along the Suez Canal while Jordan reported mortar exchanges and Israeli incursions near the southern Lebanon border. A Jordanian spokesman said Israeli forces damaged villages and a farmer was wounded. In Amman guerrilla forces shelled Israeli settlements as Tripoli hosted a summit amid Nasser’s speech to Libyan crowds.
