The U S Chamber of Commerce disputes federal crop curtailment, arguing farm prosperity rests on expanding markets. The 35 member agriculture committee led by Harper Sibley states government aid should favor private initiative, with bills awaiting conference action.
In Chicago on December 20, the Air Transport Association urged the creation of a non political permanent government agency to regulate airlines. Senators Byrd Bailey Adams George Bone and Bridges criticize revenue declines and rising deficits while La Follette advocates relief by decelerating business growth. Page 12 Col 3.
London residents faced a thick fog that disrupted city life and caused dangerous scenes. Police struggled with damaged streets while fire crews fought unseen blazes. Charlton goalkeeper Bartram remained at his post unaware the match was halted until later.
In a New York fire, Agnes Collins and her two children slept as Christmas lights sparked. Neighbor Olga Bonin pulled Collins from the flames and rescued the two children, both badly burned, with Bonin suffering burns herself.
Prof Ellsworth Huntington asserts that babies born in March from late February have greater potential for intellectual achievement and live about four years longer. Government officers said remnants could be destroyed with heavy cannonade but hostages in buildings prevented action as propaganda urged surrender.
In Youngstown on December 26 Mrs. Cordelia Campbell 55 died in a local hospital from a gunshot wound to the abdomen received during a family Christmas gathering. Her daughter Louise 20 is held in jail in Warren as authorities investigate whether the shooting was accidental. An autopsy is planned and coroner Dr. J C Henshaw ordered further proceedings. Prosecutor Paul J Regan said the case remains under inquiry with Miss Campbell's court access restricted.
The Guaranty Trust company urged broad planning of relief for the needy during low moods. In a year-end review for 1937 and the 1938 outlook it called for a long-range relief plan, a balanced budget approach including tax base widening, and a systematic program to reduce the public debt. It also urged industrial cooperation among government, business, and labor to bridge differences. The 1938 outlook noted recession may persist but little indicates a downturn as severe as the prior one.
Vincent Franco 24 killed Antoinette Imperiale 22 in Newark when he beat her with a 10 inch iron pipe, fired shots, then ran her down with his car on a lonely avenue. He told police he was angry because she did not love him anymore.

Coroner's jury ruled accidental. Investigators say he may have leaned forward to reach for something, disturbing loose packing material with his elbow.

New York on Christmas night a mother and her two young children died from gas poisoning in a Hudson River waterfront flat. A neighbor found the three after noon. the mother had started more than 20 notes to her estranged husband beginning with Merry Christmas.

In Honolulu a Chris Clipper was set to depart with a 45 minute movie record of the Panay bombing. Cameraman Norman Alley, his wife and three children, two federal agents, and the film would travel via Alameda to New York for transfer to a chartered plane bound for Washington. A print then goes to Washington for Roosevelt and officials.
Shanghai dispatches report Tsinan the capital of Shantung fell to Japanese forces. Japanese columns crossed the Yellow River and pressed deeper into northern Shantung as another army captured Hangchow and Chekiang provinces. The fall marks the seventh provincial capital captured, with Nanking among the others. authorities note thousands of Japanese troops crossed the river.
Miss Nancy Singleton sixteen and C Bernard Gates junior eighteen, prominent Charleston youths, recuperate in Charleston hospitals after a four car Marmet road crash near Rush Creek bridge Saturday night. Lionel Light twenty three injured, state police said a full report may be available today. Gates, visiting from Culver Military Academy Indiana, suffered a pelvis fracture. initial reports suggested skull fracture.

Reinforced British units closed in from three directions on December 28. Official casualty tallies listed 320 dead after three days of fighting in Galilee with Arabs suffering the majority. Lieut M W Mountain and Private J B Creasey were killed. three British soldiers wounded. about 200 terrorists remained, as roads were closed to private traffic and troops hunted guerrillas along the northern frontier.
