Man Killed Two Hurt In U S 21 Crash

One young man died and two others were injured in a two car collision on U S 21 seven miles north of Charleston. Hansford L. Miller 22 of Grapevine near Sissonville died on arrival at Charleston General Hospital with multiple severe injuries. Ariel Bunk Jordan 31 also of Grapevine was in critical condition with a possible skull injury and shock. Gearld L. Roe 22 of Sissonville was listed in serious condition with a throat injury and possible larynx damage. Roe drove one of the cars. conditions prevented determining drivers. Three Cunningham ambulances aided the victims. The crash occurred on a rain slick curve. investigation continued. Miller’s boot was ejected in the impact.

Bert Sonis, WTIP Head, Dies at 42

Berton Sonis, longtime WTIP head, died yesterday at age 42 from complications of a lung condition. Born October 24, 1915 in Worcester, Massachusetts, he moved to Charleston in 1943 and worked at WCHS before becoming program director. He served on Kiwanis and Press clubs boards and belonged to the Elks Lodge.

Tornadoes Kill 5 In 2-State Area

A pair of tornadoes struck Illinois and Missouri causing at least five deaths and numerous injuries. Morphy's Bord, Du Qualn, and Farmington reported fatalities while Mount Vernon, with about 16 500 residents, faced widespread destruction and heavy casualties. Local teams and neighboring towns aided rescue efforts as communications faltered.

Buffalo High School coach transfer sparks student walkout

Buffalo High School students walked out in protest over the sudden transfer of basketball coach Harold Sandy Carr to George Washington Junior High.
