Mrs. Vivian N. Hawkins of South Charleston won the annual Gift Basket automobile award after guessing within 41 cents of the contest’s total proceeds of 14 449 59. Her husband Gamble Hawkins works as a car washer at Appalachian Electric Power Co. garage. She guessed 14 450 and received a 1956 Pontiac four door hardtop sedan donated by Park Pontiac Inc.

Man's Body Found Beside New Cut Yule Tree
A 23 year old Charleston man Charles Barker was found dead near a freshly cut Christmas tree in the woods. Coroner Dr Golf P Lilly says the death is due to a brain injury from a fall with no visible wounds. Barker worked for Replacement Parts Co and is survived by his wife two daughters and several relatives. His body lay at Curry Mortuary awaiting further procedures.

Hawkins Family Receives News of Gift Basket Donations

All a mistake explains farmer bitten by horse
Finis Purkeypile, a Mendota area farmer, was bitten on the face when two mares nipped each other while he led them to water. The horse’s teeth slashed his cheek, requiring several stitches. He says the injury was a mistake and does not intend to part with the mares.

Gettysburg Pa December 17 President Eisenhowers physicians reported his recovery from a heart attack as excellent and encouraging but he must wait until mid February to decide about a second term. Irate Mate Finds Friend at Home in Charleston Shootout
Charleston man Carl Courtney returned from Jacksonville to find another man in his house and fired 37 rounds from an automatic rifle, wounding his wife Mary.
