Harold Artis a 17 year old from Portsmouth Ohio was placed in an iron lung after a broken neck left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. The respirator, rushed from Boston, was bought by the American Legion and the Forty and Eight society following no appeal by Dr. Jones. The youth slept an hour after placement and said he felt comfortable inside the machine.
The Alcatraz fortress on the island in San Francisco Bay is described as a grim prison. It sits atop a cliff with steel and stone, famed for numerous escape attempts since its fortification eighty years ago. The federal prison established four years ago has seen only one other recorded escape attempt. A mail robber named Jor Bowers supposedly fell to his death from the west cliff in April 1930 amid guards fire.

Sen Cotton Ed Smith urged buying 4 000 000 bushels of cotton while Sen McNary proposed 30 000 000 bushels of wheat. both failed 39 26 and 43 18 respectively. Secretary Wallace said the eventual farm legislation will be stronger than the bills now before the senate and house.
Chicago December 15. John Howard aged 57 a piano tuner was found sleeping in a tavern by a policeman. In court he explained his last job was tuning a piano and he was paid off in drinks, claiming he was collecting his final installment when things became hazy.
Marshalltown Indiana December 16 19 year old Doward Jack Rogers faced a 30 day sentence after striking a policeman when the officer called him a “bum.” Rogers said he'd rather be a knight of the road or a floater and received the fine in the incident labeled a Marshalltown jolt.
Tokyo reports the navy will honor the Panay victims and three oil ships with a formal salute the highest gesture Japan can render. Admiral Mitsunuma recalled for the attack. Navy Minister Yonai met the Emperor as Washington seeks indemnities apologies and assurances no repeats occur. The government says talks are between states, with no royal involvement.
United States officials, citing partial dispatches, confirmed the Panay was machine-gunned by Japanese motorboats and aircraft during the sinking.
