Newark dispatch reports Federal Judge William Clark ruled the 18th amendment invalid, saying prohibition was a government issue best decided by a constitutional convention rather than state legislatures. He cites Article Five and argues the convention method should have been used. He spent extensive time on constitutional history and the framers’ intent. Page 2 continues.
Defense witnesses testified that Gurlot Bayless's mother, Mee Eve Bailey, allegedly threatened to kill the children if Washington County officials took Evalyn. Clara Payton, a Grandview maid, recalled the mother saying she would “get rid of you.” The testimony arose during the trial of James Dunn and three others for involvement in a drinking party on the Ohio river island near Grandview Inland.
In Danville Virginia a patrol shot at 74 year old Lockwood Pickett of Forest Hills North Carolina during a gold age chase near the Schoolfield mill strike zone injuring him seriously. A separate notice states 47 families in mill owned homes face eviction hearings December 21 amid ongoing strike activity.
A Bluefield merchant was found shot dead behind the counter of an India store. Magistrate J O Mangus acting coroner said the pistol lay in his hand unfired and the robbers appeared to have fled in fear after the encounter. The victim, identified as McCloud, was found last night or early today with his cash and goods untouched.
State budget commission trimmed 630,100 from the board of control revenue estimates for the next biennium, restoring 5,000 to Potomac state school, with deferrals on penitentiary and Huntington and Pairmont hospital. Graduate school at West Virginia University discussed but deferred. several boards eliminated to save funds.
In a mass shelter effort seventy destitute men slept on cots provided by the American Legion in the basement of city hall. Many more lay on the floor as police and volunteers scrubbed the space to ease stench and discomfort, offering a rare glimpse of urban hardship.
A five man bank robbery gang was chased through Indiana and split by a posse near Clinton Indiana. Two bandits were dead three captured with one fatally wounded deputy and another shot by pursuers. Loot estimated at about fifteen thousand dollars recovered from the Citizens Bank of Clinton and a separate Allegheny Valley Bank hold up recovered later. Lawsuits of the robbers and suspects spread across Clinton Terre Haute Chicago and Pittsburgh areas with police increasing patrols and bank precautions statewide.
In Pittsburgh three bandits robbed the Manchester Savings Bank and Trust Company after opening hours. Officials including President O. Gerwig and staff were held at gunpoint while the vault holding about $2,000 was opened. Private guards were posted at many area banks as fear of further attacks spread.
Parig December 16 United Press report on former French wartime leader Raymond Poincare shows his condition improved slightly but remains grave. Doctors noted signs of uremia risk and paralysis from strokes, with overwork blamed for his deteriorating health and visitors restricted at his residence.
Major Charles A. Shepard testified about his wife’s death insisting he did not poison her. He described her addiction to narcotics and liquor and said he did all he could to help her recover. He praised Miss Brannan as a sympathetic woman who had shown him interest.
Betty Rutherford Blanche Chittum and Virginis Mae Neal held a bake sale to aid The Gazette Santa Claus fund. They raised 2.75 dollars, sent to the fund, boosting efforts for the poor in and around Charleston. The event inspired more offers of help as Santa Claus headquarters mobilizes for gifts and cheer.
