The governor of Pennsylvania calls an extraordinary legislative session to address the anthracite coal situation. Officials argue the industry is a monopoly and public interest justifies state control, framing a path to restart mines and influence production and distribution.
The speaker urges persistent push of West Virginia coal into eastern markets to meet anthracite fairly. Freight hurdles and past limits are blamed, with belief that private management outperforms state operation in Pennsylvania’s coal industry.
The report by the house committee criticizes army and navy air services for shortages of flying personnel and equipment and urges a single department of national defense. It endorses Colonel Mitchell’s warnings on aircraft urgency, arguing discipline should yield to public service and timely aviation progress.
The Clarksburg Exponent argues West Virginia should supply the nation’s fiddlers, not Maine. It hails West Virginia’s elder fiddler prospects led by local players from Webster Springs, challenging Henry Ford’s choice Mellie Dunham and praising Appalachian tunes like the Virginia Reel. The piece mocks Maine’s claim and urges a statewide contest to crown genuine mountain fiddlers.
A long edited speech collection critiques Mussolini’s plans and warns against empire building while noting New York reaction. It discusses air power urgency, Franco-British debt concerns, and fears of dictatorial projects, citing Garvin and political dynamics in Europe.
Fragmented prose from a historical Washington chronicle describes congressional actions on prohibition debt and tax policy. It notes handlings of debt payments from multiple nations, a ministerial resignation, and House approval of exemptions and income tax measures amid partisan shifts.
A dozen college graduates leave campus to seek 25 000 in Gotham. They pursue success on their own, relying on newly acquired knowledge rather than parental support. The piece notes saxophonists and bands appearing at various venues, while local town musicians earn fifty cents weekly, rehearsing around social spots and a Leopold Frank saloon backdrop.
Bug a Boos by Bugs Baer lampoons government snooping and dance fads with satire on mistletoe debates, Charleston mastery, and high paying jazz figures like Roger Wolfe Kahn and Paul Whiteman. The piece mixes social critique with flamboyant asides about parties, budgets, and kissing under greenery.
In a woodland tale, Paddy the beaver and Peter Rabbit finish a tree warning watch as a falling trunk risks the trio. Peter learns to keep lookout while Paddy and the others work, planning Peter’s role as vigilant watchman against Old Man Coyote, Buster Bear, and Yellow Cat threats.
Washington society columns report a rise in rude dancing and escort shortages at debutante events. The Post’s society editor notes many men abandon partners for punch or other groups, leaving women often without escorts and seated alone.
Frayer for my little girl asks divine protection, purity of heart, and strength. It requests guardianship from harm and selfishness, with love and goodness guiding her years and life.
Washington reports record freight car loadings totaling 1 020 873 for the week ending December 6, driven by rain and gravy shipments and diverse freight. A second item notes China facing ginger famine due to Bolshevik disturbances.
