Drillers Seek Gas in Tuscaloosa Sand Formation

Appalachian oil and gas companies including Exxon Columbia Gas Transmission and Chevron explore the Tuscaloosa Sand in southern Louisiana seeking large gas reserves. Chevron reports a 21 345 foot gusher with potential state gas reserves up to 3 trillion cubic feet while others drill deeper and lease vast tracts.

Widows OK Settlement In Pit Deaths

In Lewisburg three widows from Hominy Falls miners killed in a 1968 pit flood reach an out-of-court settlement with Maust Coal and Coke Co and others. The six day trial in Greenbrier Circuit Court ended with the jury dismissed, terms undisclosed. Plaintiffs: Hilda Walkup, Helen McClung, Rowena Burdette.

Voter Registration Ends Dec 21 for Levy Election

Kanawha County Clerk Kelly Castleberry announces a December 21 deadline to register to vote in the January special school levy election. Voter Registration Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through December 21, and residents who have married or moved should update their registration at the office beside the Kanawha County Courthouse on Virginia Street East.
