U S government reports show the log jam in building easing and retail trade improving. Agriculture measures aim to raise farm income with surplus wheat purchases loan programs and corn loans, while July permits rise 79 percent from June and overall construction value up 41 percent.
The National Bituminous Coal Commission reported stronger output for the week ended Aug 20, with total production at 6,232,000 net tons, up 238,000 tons from the prior week. West Virginia produced 1,791,000 tons, up from 1,715,000. June's revised output rose about 5.4 percent over May.
A Spanish civil war naval engagement off Gibraltar pits a government destroyer Tyran against four insurgent ships including the cruiser Canarias and three destroyers. The fight lasts several hours before dawn, with at least 246 dead and 21 bodies recovered from forward compartments. The Tyran Antonio Castro limps away damaged and under tow, while the Jose Lisis Tier is attacked ten miles southeast of Gibraltar.
Lynchburg dispatch reports Senator Glass of Virginia condemning Interior Secretary Ickes as a confirmed blackguard and hatred for Congress that opposed New Deal spendthrift policies. The annual Nellis safety meet drew several thousand spectators as Capt. Vilda Hiles' team placed second and Capt. Dennis A. Mooney's squad took third. In the girls division Wade sisters Mildred and Lahoma captained first and second, while the boys winning squad was led by John Keenan.
Willam Roy Boyd of Quincy, 29, died after an automobile struck him on Route 60 during evening hours. He died before reaching McMillan hospital. The collision was Kanawha County’s 40th traffic fatality of the year and was under state investigation.
Secretary of State Hull warned aggressor nations that not even a victor can gain from war and urged binding commitment to the Kellogg Briand pact on its tenth anniversary. SHANGHAI August 27. Heavily engaged Japanese field armies pounded Chinese defenses in the Yangtze valley to end a 32 day deadlock in Hankow. Chinese positions in La-Shan mountains 16 miles from Kiukiang bore the onslaught in humid heat above 100 degrees. Objective was to blast oil of the front and pave the way for infantry and an assault against railway and highway defenses. Chinese force of 110,909 reported in battle line. Farmers aid soldiers by throwing up barricades against the Japanese offensive.
Kanawha County schools prepare to start on September 6 with a general teachers' meeting at Charleston High School auditorium. Virgil L. Flinn confirmed the plan yesterday as nearly 1,400 teachers gather for addresses by Blinn and Mada mm. Principals convene in their buildings at 2:40 p.m. About 44,000 pupils will resume classes. The first holiday runs October 34-28 during the State Faculty association gathering.
New York August 27 Amid police raids on policy banks two gambling hideouts were raided and 24 prisoners taken. Judge warns of shock two women Willianna Hammond 38 and LS Ware 36 identified as witnesses in the Hines case were held in 1000 bail each after arraignment with six men on charges of operating a new policy bank. Juan Campas 48 and Anacito Romero 65 were held in bail.
Cincinnati August 27 07 spokesmen for the Harlan County Coal Operators Association and United Mine Workers announced a reached agreement for a standard contract. The seven hour day five day week basic rate five dollars and forty cents per day covers sixteen companies and about fifteen thousand workers in the Harlan county coal fields. The pact drawn up at Tal o Springs Tennessee last week was signed by operators and union representatives in Cincinnati last night.
President Roosevelt will visit Maryland likely next Sunday to press for defeating Sen. Tydings. Rep. Davey Lewis announced the invitation and a tour of the lower Potomac bridge site, signaling a larger political appeal to Maryland voters.
MaState Sen. Edgar A. Brain announced his withdrawal from the United States senate race tonight leaving incumbent EB. D. Smith and Gov. Olin Johnston as the only candidates in the Democratic primary to be held next Tuesday in Columbia.
