West Virginia labor concluded a pivotal convention with signs of forming two federations instead of a single unit. President Green expected to move against Easton over the C I O issue, while Charleston was chosen for the next district convention amid ongoing splits and organizational changes.
Atlantic City N J August 25 William Green said tonight the American Federation of Easton Virginia federation of labor will appear here next Tuesday for trial on charges of disobeying the federation order to keep C S O delegates out of the state convention. The situation arose after a large portion of delegates from the Hale ae voted to seat members from J s council while the council studied various crowd problems.
Chicago August 26 swift national mediation board action forestalled a strike of 350000 rail workers. Both unions and carriers agreed to submit wage dispute demands of 20 percent to the federal agency. Mediation hearings were set to begin Saturday August 28 in Chicago as the conference ends with the board taking jurisdiction and plans to begin mediation. The carriers accepted a services offer and the strike was placed in abeyance pending outcome.
President Roosevelt sails for Hyde Park after a busy day in Washington signing bills and meeting with Cabinet. He plans a three week stay in Dutchess county and vicinity, returning for Constitution Day speech on September 17. The Gazette will sponsor a bicycle race meet at the Four t Fairgrounds track on Sunday September 5 during the Virginia Great Free Fall. A series of events for all bicycle riders will be staged, with organizers predicting strong entry numbers as interest grows. The M. GAs, through Cliff Moldren, director of boys activities, will co sponsor the event with The Gazette.

Andrew W. Mellon, secretary of the treasury under three presidents and one of the world’s richest men, died peacefully at 7:30 p.m. in the home of his daughter Mrs David Bruce in Southampton. He was 82 or 83, his health weakened by heat and bronchial pneumonia. Mellon built vast oil and aluminum fortunes and a global business empire, yet remained shy and reserved throughout life.
Wheeling officials report an abandoned automobile provided the chief clue in the investigation of 42 year old Mike Russell’s murder. Police Lieutenant James Stanley and Prosecutor S. C. Lee Spillera confirm Russell, a numbers operator, was killed near his home and that the car matches the killer’s description.
