German aviators led by Captain Wolfgang Von Gronau landed at Queensport Harbor Nova Scotia after crossing from Cartwright Harbor Labrador in a Dornier Wal. They planned to continue to the United States weather permitting, tracing a coast route past New England. Fog and chart shortages forced an earlier landing. Fred Hack and Edward Zimmer accompanied him while Albrecht served as wireless operator.
A two-vehicle crash near Lewisburg on the Midian trail left G. W. Pollock a 66 year old Williamsburg farmer dead at the scene and his granddaughters Latoma Harrow 21 and Monica Harrow 10 died later in a Ronceverte hospital. Mrs Pollock and other family members were injured as they traveled to the Greenbrier County fair. Bi L Rupert of Franklin drove the other car and state police said Pollock failed to yield at an intersection before his car struck the Rupert vehicle. Mrs Rupert and others in her party suffered minor injuries. No charges had been filed yet.
Mys Phoebe Omlie arrives in Memphis in second place in the women's Dixie Air Derby from Birmingham. She clocked about two hours and 80 minutes over her nearest rival as Mrs Martin Bowman passes her en route from Birmingham with a later arrival.
LURAY Virginia August 24 UP Works on Mrs Hoover s dream skyline road along the Blue Ridge will begin soon. President and Mrs Hoover discussed plans with H Angell of the Virginia state conservation commission at the mountain camp. The route will span 3000 feet to Bayland camp and may extend to Mary s Rock. The road aims to be America s first scenic highway in the Shenandoah area, opening to auto tourists next summer.
Eighteen year old Eadie Schneider of Jersey City flew from Roosevelt Field to Columbus in one hop and set three junior trans continental records, beating Frank Goldsborough’s marks. He logged 52 hours 42 minutes on the journey with stops at Albuquerque Wichita and Columbus. He faced storms over the Appalachians and a fuel shortage between Albuquerque and Wichita while piloting Thea Kangaroo.
County coroner Dr. W P Black ruled Mrs. Nora Surface of Hammack's home died by her own hand. She was found in the old house near her son's home Saturday with a shotgun at her neck and face downward. Witnesses including family members testified. relatives were exonerated of blame. The funeral was held this afternoon at Wesley M Church. burial at Spring Hill Cemetery.
