Kashmir officials plan to distribute nearly 50,000 rifles to residents of about 1,700 border villages in Dammu province. Villagers will form home guard units to defend against marauders after a visit by Chief Minister G. M. Sadiq who noted local demand for arms.
Canadian civil rights worker Paul Saltzman testified that Byron de la Beckwith Jr. struck him in the mouth at a Leflore County courthouse rally on Aug. 10, but Judge Charles Pollard dismissed the assault and battery charge. Three defense witnesses backed Beckwith, saying he did not strike anyone and only saw a scuffle in the darkness.
The FBI arrested Kenneth Adams a 45 year old Anniston oil dealer on a charge of receiving stolen government property after he appeared before a U S commissioner in Birmingham. Bond was set at five thousand dollars and he was placed in Calhoun County Jail.
The Rt. Rev. John D. Toomey, a Savannah civil rights figure, calls in a Southern Cross letter for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr to reallocate resources to big cities and withdraw from small Southern towns. He claims the lid is off in Los Angeles and advocates a thorough movement house cleaning.
Sheriff R D Bridges said a Friday fire destroyed an abandoned building north of Greensburg reported to be a Negro church. He noted it had not been used for six years and he did not believe arson. The structure was nearly ready to collapse and had no known name.
E M Bartrug principal announces enrollment for Marmet Junior High School. Seventh graders from Hernshaw Marmet or Upper and Lower Chesapeake Elementary Schools assemble in Marmet Junior High gym at 9 am. Returning eighth and ninth graders report to home rooms. New students must enroll at the school 9 am to 3 pm weekdays.
About 3,000 Appalachian Power Co customers lost service briefly when a tree touched a primary line on Jefferson Road South Charleston, knocking out the South Side substation. A spokesman said the old tree was likely damaged in the week’s big storm.
Paul Smith 66 of Scott Depot and Mrs Frances McClanahan collided at the U S 60 and B Street intersection in St Albans Friday evening. Smith received a citation for failure to yield. Mrs McClanahan and her six year old daughter Marlene suffered minor injuries.
Kanawha Sheriff G Kemp announced that all 61 members of the Melton staff have enrolled in the Governor's Progress Corps. He said the 100 percent participation includes field deputies, road deputies, bailiffs, tax clerks and other personnel, the first such full enrollment among county officials in the state.
Kanawha County welfare committee reports a free clothing distribution and urges school representation. The Mercer Street clothing center operates on school days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and serves all sizes of underwear, pants, and other garments.
Members of the Alum Creek Lions Club will attend a 6 30 p m film on the New York World's Fair. The program, produced by the American Gas Association and Pan American Airways, is presented by Linda Wright, United Fuel Gas Co information representative, as part of community outreach.
A Common Pleas Court jury awarded Waldo Thacker of Miami $1000 in his $10,000 suit against Commercial Credit Corp. Thacker claimed malicious actions by the company and that a company agent twice struck his car as he tried to leave a shopping area in Miami. He alleges a fractured finger and back injury from the incident in 1962.
West Virginia Atlas earns a superior rating from the American Industrial Development Council. Gov. Smith announced the honor on Friday as the atlas, published by the State Department of Commerce, drew congratulations from D. H. W. Bath of Toronto, Canada, head of a ren e literature awards contest.
George T. Davidson a 38 year old St Albans man was found guilty of breaking and entering Martin's drug store in St Albans on April 24 by a Kanawha County court jury. Sentencing was postponed to next Friday. Davidson had filed a handwritten petition seeking a writ of habeas corpus claiming unlawful detention and civil rights violations.
IFIRE reports multiple incidents in Charleston on Friday including a car fire at Michigan and Quarrier with no damage at 8:20 am and a city park structure fire at 12:14 pm causing $200 damage. Additional calls: 301 Virginia St for a car with no damage at 8:40 pm. 603 Brooks St trash can at 8:58 pm. false alarm at 636 Garrison Ave at 9:40 pm. No. 4 Fire Station car with $20 damage at 9:40 pm.
