FATRBANKS Alaska Aug 15 INS A high profile search for six Soviet transpolar fliers continued as American and Canadian crews comb the Arctic from Fairbanks to the Alaska coast. Mattern piloted a Lockheed 12 north from Oakland while Soviet airmen from Siberia were headed toward the pole. No signals reached searchers and the Arctic silence persisted after nearly 40 hours. Mattern hoped to join Levanevsky and Serchenko in the rescue effort, with plans to head to Moscow next spring. No air corps planes join the hunt locally. An offer from Canadian Air Corporation Ltd to provide gas supplies was considered.
