At a remote crossing in Louiseville Quebec a freight train struck a large truck loaded with 43 passengers. Twenty two people were killed and twelve injured, many flung into the ditch as rescuers worked by flashlight. The truck occupants were returning from a political meeting when the collision occurred. Two investigations were ordered.
State labor commissioner investigates union led reports as Charleston officials and the city bridge committee protest importing workers for the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Co project. Local Labor promises use of prevailing wage local men, while unions claim plenty of Charleston and West Virginia workers are available.
Toledo faces a week long gas strike as the new employees union threatens to halt service. Edward McGrady rushes from Bermuda to mediate wage talks between the union and Ohio Fuel Gas and Northwestern Ohio Natural Gas. City Manager John Edy warns the city may seize plant operation if crews withdraw, with police leave canceled and firemen on 23 hour shifts.
A Brooks Smith and French survey shows Charleston Industrial district five percent above normal in July, with national indexes improving from 17 percent below to 10 percent below normal. 22 districts were normal or above, 125 below, 147 sampled, with 48 declines and 19 unchanged since June. Albuquerque four percent below to Bakersfield six above.
Tax Commissioner Fred L. Fox returned the 18 county budgets to county courts for revision after finding incorrect general relief fund estimates. Counties listed include Barbour, Braxton, Brooke, Grant, Hampshire, Cabell, Hancock, Jefferson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mason, Raleigh, Randolph, Tucker, Upshur and Wayne. Fox said most counties paid maximum levies except Brooke, Jefferson and Cabell and that many levying bodies must still meet Tuesday to finalize budgets.
The National Union for Social Justice named Rev. Charles E. Coughlin of Detroit its first president and endorsed Rep. William Lemke and Thomas C. O'Brien for president and vice president. The Detroit priest asserted control under a new constitution and appointed a 23 member nominating committee.
Virgil H. Ettinger of Lima Ohio, reputed Black Legion chief, was arrested by Lima police after a Detroit warrant alleged he possessed six hand grenades during a prior visit. Detroit authorities say a cross state warrant charged him with possession of explosive material with malice. Ettinger denied the charges and accused the Black Legion of a frame.
Hollywood scours for George S. Kaufman after he vanishes to New York, defying a contempt of court warrant. Judge Knight warns re arrest if he returns, while deputies scramble through trains and flights seeking the famed diary figure amid the Astor Thorpe custody saga.
A Los Angeles woman, possibly Carola De Vries, kissed Adolf Hitler on the cheek during the Olympic swimming final in Berlin. The crowd reacted with delight and the incident prompted a flurry of rumors as guards scanned the stadium for the unidentified participant who obtained the Führer’s autograph.
Washington reports administration talks consider extending the Reconstruction Finance Corp lending power for another year beyond January 31. The agency remains active with new advances while repayments total about 47 percent of 10.184 billion in loans since 1932, including loans to bank reorganizations, mortgage firms, and industrial enterprises.

Residents of the old lower town district awoke to find a blocks long stretch of concrete sidewalk stolen from the south side of Olmstead street. The thieves returned the next night to remove the sidewalk on the north side of the block, leaving the street damaged and residents outraged.

In Wayne the crash at a centennial celebration killed pilot Tevin Swedler, 35, of Toledo, and passengers Glenn Belert, 28, and Robert Daniel, 20, who were aboard the craft as spectators looked on. Officials offered no immediate explanation for the accident.

Actresses who alleged they were discharged from a Boston WPA heater project due to refusing to entertain federal officials retracted their accusations. Deputy Administrator Aubrey Williams announced an impartial inquiry board to review possible discrimination. A Massachusetts Acting State Administrator Paul Edwards will name two appointees and the other member. Edwards began hearings on the charges, reporting the retracting of the complaint.
Mrs. Lilly Durham shot her husband John Durham three times in the chest and then fired a rifle through her jaw after chasing him from their Donnally Street home. police described the motive as insane jealousy. Both were hospitalized in grave condition.
Britain warned Europe that failure to keep hands off the Spanish conflict would threaten continental peace. London also accepted the French no intervention plan and pledged neutrality and an embargo on arms to Spain if Italy Germany Soviet Russia and Portugal do likewise. The move followed Foreign Secretary Ferm bach push to reassure public opinion though a broader embargo tied to financial aid remains in dispute.
Sohn Anderson, 63, a Fond du Lac Wisconsin conductor on the Soo Line, collapsed and died of a stroke while playing pinchole in a tavern in Inkster tonight. He had just bid on a 480 hand, one of the best possible draws.
In Alexandria Louisiana on August 15 women held a one day municipal reign led by Aubrey White as mayor for a day. Madam Chief of Police C C Roberts arrested five men for not buying drinks. Mrs Herbert Brown caught five stray dogs and Mrs Dan Jacobs kept streets clear. The day ended with no court cases and the fire chief’s job unused.
In New York on August 15, Surrogate Foley ordered Mrs. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and General Cornelius Vanderbilt to immediately pay Mrs. Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt $100000 from the Alice Gwynne Vanderbilt estate. The ruling also directs interest to the Guaranty Trust company, with custody of Gloria Morgan Vanderbilt previously awarded to Mrs. Whitney.
