The Women's Civic Council, a coordinating body of 29 city organizations, advanced a 20 point program for A Better Charleston. Priorities include teenage recreation with centrally located swimming pools, better government, schools, health, and cultural gains.
Mrs. Iva Thurston 63 of 437 Wyoming Street died in a two car collision on Route 60 at Stop 13 yesterday around 5 p m Her husband John A Thurston 61 was treated at Thomas Memorial Hospital for shocks and minor injuries The other driver E T Bird of a trailer camp Stop 13 said he stopped to turn when Thurston struck from the rear State Police Trooper W S Webb reported the Thurston car left the road and crashed into an embankment before rolling over the camp area.

A UN informant says nations are quietly reinforcing U N ground troops in Korea under General MacArthur as the Security Council remains stuck on a procedural deadlock. Fifty three of sixty nine UN members back efforts to repel North Korean invaders while France and Britain discuss a unified Western European command led by the United States to bolster defense.
Lynn Farley of Charleston High School is chosen as Miss Gazette and will appear in the North-South Football Game and Pigskin Pageant Parade. She is a student leader, former Nazi Society officer, and plans to enter Randolph Macon Woman’s College in September.
A government official said President Truman will send new anti subversive recommendations to Congress early next week to tighten Communist control. Senators Mundt and McCarran weigh related moves, with Mundt pushing registration and economic controls as Ferguson backs broader measures.
James G. Vandergrift president of Vandergrift Acidizing Co. will judge the third annual Pigskin Pageant along with Jane Feds and Pat Robinson. The event opens North South Football Game festivities next Thursday. Vandergrift is a Ohio State University graduate and heads the oldest individually owned acidizing company. The pageant commission selects the winning float in the gigantic spectacle.
Akron report notes Butch Williamson as a leading contender in the All-American Soap Box Derby race at Derby Downs. He ranks among the seven fastest cars, with others from Gary Indiana San Francisco and Mansfield clocked near 27.6 to 27.8 seconds. The event draws more than 34 000 spectators as 1 p m Charleston time approaches.
Two more West Virginia Reserve units have been alerted for active duty. The 354th Engineer Construction Battalion and the 470th Strategic Intelligence Unit Research and Analysis, both based in Morgantown, are announced by the West Virginia Military District. Lt. Col. Thomas E. Ennis, a history professor, commands the intelligence unit, with ties to West Virginia University. The 314th Engineers, with companies in Clarksburg Martinsburg and Weirton, are led by Lt. Col. John P. Nalting, with Capt. Robert B.J. White and Capt. Guy R. Avey Sr commanding Companies A and B respectively.
The North South Football Game, Inc announces West Virginia State College will enter a float in the third annual Pigskin Pageant set for August 17 on the eve of the 17th North South Football Game. Both events are locally sponsored by The Gazette.
The Kanawha County Court approved a 1950 51 general budget of 1 357 265 with a levy of 1 189 503 and 224 475 from other receipts. Increased valuations plus a year end balance funded the raise. salaries for clerks rise 1 000 each. Sheriff Richards and others receive higher allocations. child shelter and health department funding also up.
Britain and nine Western nations seek government backing for a united European army as a response to Soviet threat. The Council of Europe consultative assembly approved the idea 89 to 5 with 27 abstentions, though it has no power to form an army or defense ministry. France may see Bidault and Reynaud lead the drive, with Britain and France expected to bring the plan to their parliaments.
Don Williams reports that the soft coal industry is ready to meet war-stimulated demand. Jesse V. Sullivan says production capacity and miners are available, with equipment sufficient for 700 million tons annually, though sparseness of operable and safe transport may pose issues. No coal rationing expected even if Korean War expands.
Washington reports a top military atomic energy spokesman described A bombs as a potential new battlefield method. He said bombs could be driven into the earth to strike troops, collapse buildings, and hurl radioactive material for miles. He noted a spray tactic could cover fields, while another document warned there is no quick way to distribute such devices without lethal consequences.
United States and South Korean forces defend the Pusan Taegu line as six North Korean divisions move to positions along the Naktong River. Enemy armor and artillery push on a 20 mile front near Waeswan while a second thrust targets the Pohang area and air strip near Yongdok. The Fourth Division strikes disrupt the Naktong bridgehead near Chansyong 25 miles from Taegu as U N supply lines come under pressure.
Two persons perished late last night in a head on collision miles from the city of State. Five others were injured and taken to Charleston General Hospital. State Police investigate the crash as one car attempted to pass.
