Beckley police ruled Friday’s deaths of Leo Russell Walicki and Althea Lee Gibson as murder by their own actions. Walicki, 32, shot Gibson in the neck then killed himself with a sawn off shotgun. Neighbors said an after midnight argument preceded the gunfire. both were fugitives from Michigan for burglary and forgery.
Ford outlined inflation as the high priority for his administration and announced Nelson Rockefeller ally Allan Greenspan? No, Allan Greenspan nominated by Nixon to be council chair. Robert T Hartmann would join as counselor to the president and Alexander Haig would remain on staff. Ford took the oath at the White House with Betty by his side, noting the historic moment and asking for prayers as he becomes the first chief executive to assume office in those circumstances.
A Charleston manufacturing corporation reached a conciliation agreement with the Charleston Human Rights Commission and agreed to implement a nondiscriminatory hiring policy. The accord settles a bias hiring complaint without admission of wrongdoing.
In Gary West Virginia AP Arnold Miller ordered four southern West Virginia union locals to end a three day work stoppage affecting over 1,500 coal miners. Roving pickets closed five U S Steel coal mines in McDowell County after a mediation board failed to settle reinstatement of a fired miner. The firm involved, unnamed, agreed to pay 200 to the complainant and to post job openings and ensure minority hiring. More than 37 million in federal aid is planned for sport fish and wildlife restoration and hunter safety programs across multiple territories.
A United Nations military transport crashed near Mt Hermon in Syria during clashes between Israeli warplanes and Syrian defenses. All nine aboard died, including five crew and four Canadian passengers on a Beirut to Damascus peacekeeping liaison flight. Syrian authorities blamed antiaircraft fire. Israel denied involvement in the area at the time.
Oregon born former presidential assistant John Ehrlichman was suspended from practicing law by the Washington state Supreme Court. The suspension follows a bar association action and a July 31 federal conviction in D C for conspiracy and perjury.
Two inmates from Huttonsville Correctional Center, Ronald McGraw and Danny Hardy, both 30, escaped from a painting detail at the State Police Academy in Institute Thursday night and were arrested Friday in Huntington by troopers. They were serving sentences for forgery and had reportedly been given a ride from Charleston.

Judge Taylor aged 63 dies in hospital after long service in West Virginia courts. Senate President William T. Brotherton calls him a guiding figure and second father. He chaired Masonic, Shrine and church roles and held bar association memberships. his son Frank L. Taylor Jr. died in a 1972 Virginia traffic accident. Service set for Monday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

Friday the board approved a resolution enabling the superintendent to allocate the public school support funds by county. The plan follows a nearly five million dollar reduction and a 7.5 percent pay raise for staff, with objections to formula-based escalation. The action notes transportation and operating expenses will be cut, while salaries remain unaffected. Also approved was Cedar Lakes recreation area master plan including new storage, parking, and courts. Southard resigned to join Alderson-Broaddus College as research director and professor.
At Kana wha Intermediate Court six more witnesses testified in the Floyd Mitchell Snow armed robbery trial. Defense evidence places Snow visiting Florida during the Mundy home robbery on Sept 28, 1973, while prosecutors rely on police photos and lineups identifying him.
Police say three year old Jeffrey Cala accidentally shot and killed his mother Donna Cala who was pregnant. A 22 caliber rifle was in the house probably for family protection and the child appears to have known where the gun was and was playing with it according to neighbors.
