An Alland Greyhound bus veered off Route 21 near Simonville yesterday afternoon, crashing into a culvert embankment and injuring at least 22 people. Authorities reported the bus was en route to Parkersburg when the mishap occurred.
A Greyhound bus veered from U.S. Route 22 near the Kanawha Jackson county line, overturning into a ditch. Twenty two people were injured, none critically, with several taken to Charleston area hospitals for treatment. The bus was en route to Parkersburg, and driver Alvin L. Craig, 31, of Charleston, was reported at fault by witnesses.

Killed were Fred Cooper E E Miththens Alex Flourney Haywood Saunders and Emmett Pompey. About 45 miners were aboard the train and three severely injured men were rushed to Welch hospitals. The accident happened 340 feet underground, about 8 560 feet from the shaft foot. The slate plate fell onto cars near the head of a 25 car train. Uninjured miners helped with rescue efforts.
Dr James Anderson Garnes 82 of 1325 West Washington St died after a heart attack at a local hospital. He practiced dentistry in West Virginia for over 55 years and lived in Charleston 122 years ago. Survived by wife Kathryn Rollins Garnes a son and several daughters. body at Cunningham mortuary.
