Fifth Avenue Real Estate Boom Signals Social Shift

A New York August report notes a $859.9 million seven month Fifth Avenue land and building outlay, about a third of Manhattan's total. Old moneyed districts retreat south toward Sutton Place as mansions yield to wholesale houses, hotels, and shops, with Vanderbilt, Astor, Frick, and others selling or repurposing properties. The era of exclusive society mansions gives way to commercial towers and retail spaces, while landmarks like the Frick mansion and Waldorf Astoria face new uses and redevelopment.

Full-time health unit urged for Kanawha County

Advocates argue a full-time health unit would cut deaths and illness in Kanawha County, citing Madison County Alabama as a model. After a $14,000 yearly unit was created, Madison’s death rate fell from 19 to 12 per thousand in three years with substantial financial gains. Tuberculosis and typhoid caused 144 deaths in Kanawha last year, costing about $50,400, three times the unit’s cost. Proponents say Kanawha could mirror Madison’s results.
