FITTSBURGH Aug 3 The Paulson avenue swimming pool opened yesterday became the scene of a riot today as more than 49 men including Negroes and whites clashed. Two men were knifed and five arrested as police responded. Leon Martin 22 Negro and Joseph Heb white were hospitalized for cuts believed caused by Martin’s pen knife. Three Negroes and two whites were charged with rioting and another white man was held for interfering with officers.
Six inmates escaped from Hew Castle county workhouse and Delaware state penitentiary by tunneling through a steel cell roof and lowering to the ground from a waiting automobile outside. The fugitives, long-term robbers from Philadelphia and Wilmington, triggered a daylong search but left no trace by late afternoon.
