Gov William A Egan survived a crash when the Alaska National Guard plane went into the water off Valdez shortly after takeoff. Four aboard were killed and searchers recovered debris but no survivors. Egan continued quake reconstruction work the following day.
Sen. Hubert Humphrey said the compromise jury trial amendment to the civil rights bill will be approved and the Southern filibuster broken, with legislation passing perhaps by early summer. He predicted a cloture vote, if needed, could come in May.
Backers of Gov William Scranton of Pennsylvania say he has the best chance for the Republican nomination and announce an intensive crusade for delegates. A national Draft Scranton headquarters will open in Washington next month led by Richard C Peet, formerly western regional director in the 1960 Nixon Lodge campaign.
Rufo Lopez Fresquet, former Cuban minister of the treasury, says he acted as intermediary in U S efforts in 1960 to win Cuba's goodwill with offers of aid and even military assistance including new planes and technical support. Investigators search for Margit Steinheuer a dark haired German woman tied to the escape of war criminal Hans-Walter Zech-Nentwich who fled aboard a light plane to the Swiss airport Bagel. Zech-Nentwich was jailed in Brunswick and sentenced to four years for the II massacre of Polish Jews.

Washington(AP) Senior Republican strategists believe President Johnson is making it nearly impossible for Henry Cabot Lodge to return home or campaign for the GOP nomination. Lodge has shown no intent to quit as ambassador to South Vietnam, even if leading in the Oregon primary. Party officials doubt a San Francisco convention would nominate a candidate still overseas managing Democratic policies. The Johnson administration has tied Lodge to U S policy and described him as responsible for Viet Nam operations, while promising him full control of operations and personnel.
Air Force Cadet George D. Linville of Charleston West Virginia is named one of three outstanding military students at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. A senior in industrial management with a 3.8 average he serves as Veterans Club vice president and holds the Rayonier Foundation scholarship.
