Miners Perish In Keen Mountain Blast Tragedy
In Grundy Virginia on April 23 a massive explosion at the Keen Mountain mine of the Red Jacket Coal company killed many workers and left a grim rescue operation. U S Bureau of Mines crews recovered forty five bodies from the mine as others awaited identification. An eyewitness miner stood 50 feet from the mouth and described a roar and flame belching from the mountain. Relatives gathered, crowds clogged highways, and funerals were planned for listed victims in a scene of sorrow and ongoing investigation into the disaster.

Fight Between Rivals Looms for 1938 Elections
In Charleston two rival labor factions prepare for the 1938 primary and general elections. The Labor Non-Partisan League of West Virginia led by Van A. Bittner of the CIO high command is organizing county units as it plans an intensive campaign, with decisions on targets and asks to be made at the May meeting. The West Virginia State Federation of Labor, AF of L affiliate, will send its executive council to Charleston in late May to set political policy and activity levels for the campaign. President Tom Cairns said this week.

Music Winners Announced at West Virginia Federation

Dust Blast Said Most Terrible
