In Chicago on April 22 Sewell Avery retained control of Montgomery Ward and Co after a five hour annual meeting where Louis Wolfson conceded he could not elect a majority of directors. Wolfson claimed three seats while Avery supporters said seven for their side.
Atlantic Greyhound Corp drivers union leader Daniel V. Maroney Jr says the company wage boost is misleadingly small 2.5 to 5.9 percent and argues other Greyhound drivers nationwide will have seen larger increases since 1954 and in May 1955. He cites ongoing negotiations and publishes a member letter challenging the management statements.
An early morning carbide plant explosion at the Carbide and Carbon Chemicals site in Institute sent eight men to area hospitals. Three were released quickly, and one worker, Gail Cross Smith, faced severe burns. Firefighting lasted about two hours with a preceding small blast. No fatalities occurred.
Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. filed with the Public Service Commission for a $2,700,000 rate boost to fund its statewide expansion. The proposal would lift annual net revenues after taxes by about $1.241 million and raise customer bills by 12 to 15 percent for about 264,000 customers, with residential rates at the low end and business rates at 15 percent.

President Eisenhower lauded Dr. Jonas Salk as officials said enough Salk polio vaccine will be ready by August 1 to inoculate all U.S. children under 19. A White House ceremony honored Salk while a closed federal conference outlined vaccine distribution to states and age groups.
The Federal Reserve Board raised the required stock margin from 60 to 70 percent effective tomorrow, the second hike this year after a January 4 raise from 50 to 60 percent. The move tightens cash down payments to 70 percent or more and limits credit to 30 percent or less, applying to short sales as well as purchases.
Clarksburg April 22 Youthful offenders aged 16 to 24 face treatment in adult prisons. Judge William J. Thompson, speaking at the West Virginia Welfare Conference, calls current facilities inadequate and argues such youths are trapped in a life of crime. He notes nearly 50 percent of those arrested are in this age group and urges juvenile court reforms.
