Dun and Bradstreet reports a broad upturn across seven primary factors in the first quarter of 1934. Production rose about 10 percent, industrial activity index climbed from 71.6 to 79.8 by March, and sales and employment advanced across most major industries led by steel, automotive, chemical, and household products.
An explosion on a 20 inch natural gas valve outside Alexandria Kentucky injured Edward Sackett a 52 year old valve inspector from Charleston West Virginia. He was testing the valve when it blew sending him about 30 feet and causing a five hour fire. Sackett suffered facial and arm burns but was not in serious condition. Gas service to Cincinnati was cut off while nearby valves were shut and a northern Ohio line was connected to supply gas. Sackett is department superintendent of United Fuel Gas Co and lives in Elizabeth Street.

General Motors announces first quarter exports of cars and trucks at 38,616 units, up 79 percent from a year ago and 83 percent from the first quarter of 1932. Since spring 1933, exports reached the highest level since May 1930, with March totals at 8,106 units, up 98 percent from a year earlier and 123 percent above March 1937.
President Roosevelt urged House Democratic leaders at a White House conference to clear their program for the earliest adjournment and said he would submit a general relief bill this week of about 1.5 billion dollars. State police say William Fowler was killed by shotgun slugs in an argument near his Dunbar home. Ester Fields, 23, was arrested in Dunbar and charged with murder. Fowler’s body was taken to Barlow Funeral Home. Kanawha County coroner reports preliminary details remain unclear.
In Graz Austria on April 15 rotten eggs flew toward Chancellor Dollfuss as he appeared to deliver a speech. A hat and a bone fragments flew within 300 feet, the crowd ducking as the attack occurred amid uneasy conditions.

A young girl suffered fatal burns in Morgantown as a lightning strike caused severe injuries. The incident occurred near the Margaviewn area. details remain sparse as reporters reference the cruel event and neighbors recall the sudden accident.

Nan Johnson an 18 year old girl from Fairmont who uses braces and crutches due to infantile paralysis sang at First Presbyterian church before traveling by train with her mother to Washington to perform for President Hoover. Her triumphant vocal over adversity occurred as she prepared to sing The Lord and lift to notes of victory.
Madame Schumann-Heink, famed contralto, arrives from Huntington with her party for an 8 15 concert at Charleston High School auditorium under American Legion John Brawley post. Accompanist Mrs Katherine Pike Skedden and violinist Justice Bron perform. program features Meise Fiend ine and Meise Meinh, with a three year world tour planned after the U S appearance.
