A massive power outage hit Charleston for 1 hour 15 minutes from 5 03 p m to 6 17 p m causing widespread paralysis of business and homes. Elevator outages office darkness and halted teletypes and broadcasts affected residents and workers city wide.
Washington April 13 Special John L Lewis labeled strikes at Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates mines in Boone County West Virginia as unwarranted local brawls and threatened expulsion of Local 781 and Local 9177 from the United Mine Workers. He ordered the purge of malcontents and noted strikes began March 20 at Wharton No 1 spreading to seven mines across three counties including Kopperston and Stotesbury, before district presidents intervened to resume work at most sites.
