London reports Britain will lay down twenty modern warships by year end as part of a 2.9 billion program to strengthen forces for future collective action in Europe. The plan includes two battleships, one cruiser, one aircraft carrier, at least twelve destroyers, submarines and battle sloops.
Four contestants enter the annual Amecc Institute of Banking speaking contest at the Daniel Boone hotel at eight this evening. Frank Hostetler Jr of Charleston National Bank B Arthur Dudding Frank Mann and John Champe of Kanawha Valley Bank compete for the W. C. Hardy prize of $30 and a chance to represent the Inca chapter in Philadelphia, with the winner advancing to Seattle for the national contest.
Mrs BR Garrett and Mrs Charles Horton hosted a surprise birthday party for Miss Kathleen Garrett at Mrs Horton's home in Rummel street. Guests included Goldie Sergeant Harriet Schwing Mildred Lowery Georgia Carney Marguerite Miller Patricia Lugar and many others. The event featured a social gathering with neighbors and family in Dunbar.
